He was later given the name Nelson by a teacher at school.<br /><br /><br />2. Nelson Mandela studied law at Fort Hare University, but was expelled from the University of Fort Hare after joining a student protest. He later completed his degree through Unisa, which he followed up with a law degree from Wits University. He later went on to set up South Africa's first black law firm alongside Oliver Tambo, to help people affected by apartheid laws.<br /><br /><br />3. In 1944, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress or (ANC). The ANC wanted black South Africans to have the same human rights as whites. After his release, In 1991, Mandela became leader of the ANC.<br /><br /><br />4. Mandela admired Gandhi, who had used peaceful protest in India. </span><br />
