urban beauty said.... what do you think of Jay Z's new track Holy Grail?
i was initally intrigued by the name of Jay's latest album, Magna Carta. I discovered the title of Jay's latest album Magna Carta, is named after the first document that was produced and was forced upon the then, King John in 1215 in England by a group of his subjects.
The orignal Magna Carta document from 1215 |
Apparently this King was causing havoc at the time, such as; raising taxes, so been a peasent wasn't easy back then. Anyway, In an attempt to limit the King's powers by law and protect their privileges. It established a council of 25 barons to see the King John kept to the clauses. This document is one of the most celebrated documents in history!
So what happens when one of the greatest rappers in the world, names his latest album after one of the most celebrated documents of all time? You get Media Frenzy!
Jay decided to display the artwork for the global premiere of his album cover in Salisbury cathedral, home to the finest of the four surviving Magna Carta's... can you believe this???
The launch of his album also happens to coincide with 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta in 2015. Dean of Salisbury the Very Revd June Osborne told the Salisbury Journal;
"Jay-Z, through his album, is creating a huge awareness of this historic document and its modern significance to a huge audience in the run up to its 800th anniversary in 2015. We hope to welcome many of his fans here this summer to see the artwork in the Chapter House alongside our Magna Carta."

I've just listened to the first track he's released with Justin Timberlake "Holy Grail" and this song is about the trappings of fame
"God-damnit it I like it
The bright lights is enticing
But look what it did to Tyson
All that money in one night
30 mill for one fight
But soon as all the money blows,
all the pigeons take flight"
