‘Phenomenal Woman
of the Month: Jessica Huie
Caribbean Fashion
Week Exclusive
I was delighted to find
out that Colorblind cards was
joining the likes of, the Jamaica Observer and Jamaica Tourist Board as one of
the key sponsors for this years 2013 Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW), taking place
in Kingston.
I was even more excited
when Jessica Huie agreed to an interview on my blogsite… Whoop Whoop!!
This years Caribbean Fashion Week was off the hook! Reggae super star, Sizzla and Kelly Rowland were some of the many acts performing at this years event.
Award winning British designer and Vogue fave,
Gavin Douglas, returned to show a full collection at CFW for the first time in 4
years. Out of Ethiopia, collections from top stylists Mafi and Fitkirte Addis
as well as supermodel Yardanos graced the runway.
Also
returning to CFW was Trinidad’s finest. Claudia Pegus and Heather Jones, both
award winning designers, rated among the very best in the Caribbean.
With greeting card names such as "Super Woman", "Diamonds are a girls best friend" and "Phenomenal Woman", Colorblind cards are keen
to celebrate diversity through bright and bold greeting cards and gfits. So it
seemed only fitting that I launched my first blogpost celebrating Phenomenal
Women, making outstanding contributions
to the community after
Colorblind founder, Jessica Huie.

Q1. CFW must be amazing to be a part of, why are Colorblind cards sponsoring CFW?
Q1. CFW must be amazing to be a part of, why are Colorblind cards sponsoring CFW?
Jessica Huie: It’s a pleasure! There is a brand synergy for us.
CFW celebrates beauty, not just through the pleasing aesthetics of the models,
but through the creativity of the designers, the diversity of the audience, the
whole event is a visual feast. Equally for Caribbeans, you cant fail to feel
proud while watching CFW, a lack of diversity exists in the mainstream fashion
industry so the opportunity to see some of the worlds most beautiful black
people grace the catwalk at CFW is powerful. We celebrate beauty, pride in
identity and CFW is synonomous with that.
Q2. urban beauty said: What great things have Colorblind cards got planned for CFW?
Jessica Huie: We’ve brought along some goodies to distribute backstage where the real fun takes place! I’ll also be hosting a workshop as part of CFW’s business forum, on how to generate PR for your brand. I am passionate about Jamaica as an island, it holds a piece of my heart and any opportunity to mix business and pleasure on the rock I snap up!
Q3. There are going to be some talented designers at this
year’s event. Are there any collections in particular you looking forward to
seeing?
Jessica Huie: There are so
many! I love Meiling and Gavin Douglas and I’m also looking forward to seeing
Claudia Pegus again. A couple of years ago she asked me to model her beautiful,
vibrant collection which was an incredible experience and so out of my comfort
zone. My daughter watched me do the runway and was super proud. I would advise
all women with teenaged daughters to try and take them to CFW next year, for
girls, particularly in their teen years who are bombarded by the media’s
limited ideals of beauty, it’s a truly positive experience.
Q4. We are big fans of Colorblind cards, for our readers who’ve just discovered your
brand, please tell us more about the cards?
Jessica Huie: Color blind
Cards are the UK’s leading multicultural greeting card gift brand. We began
with the mission of putting black faces on high street shelves and have been
making that happen since our conception in 2007 having been stocked in Clinton
Cards and a household name supermarket very very soon!
Our mission is
global, and we intend to become the world’s biggest independent multicultural
card publisher, using the platform to spread our message of the importance of
self love and pride in identity.
Q5. Setting up your own business takes drive and
determination, what advice would you give to any aspiring entrepreneurs?
Jessica Huie: Be courageous, take considered risks and step beyond your comfort zone, in my experience this is where all growth takes place and this applies personally and professionally.
Q6. What is you favourite designer label?
Jessica Huie: I love the stylish simplicity of Stella Mccartney and Giuseppe Zanotti’s beautiful shoes. My favourite British tailor is a brilliant young lady who creates gorgeous work wear, her name is Nooshin.
Q7. What is you favourite high street brand?
Jessica Huie: Does Sandro
count? Otherwise Reiss probably.
Q8. So, what are
you working on at the moment and what’s next for Colorblind cards?
Jessica Huie: We have just returned from New York for the Stationary Show where we were in town to implement partnerships which will allow us to personalise cards at www.colorblindcards.com and ship from the US to the US. We will also be selling our cards through a major retailers website in the USA, its one of America’s largest chains so a superb way to kick of our US presence.
Then there is the supermarket chain launch in the UK, which is a real achievement as I feel so strongly that all kids should be able
to sit in their mum or dad’s trolley while they are doing the weekly food shop
and as they pass the card aisle, gaze up and see black faces which reflect
their own identity. I want to make that normal, not a novelty. I’m not trying to sell a few cards, I’m
trying to contribute to a social shift which impacts positively on the society
my babies and all our babies, grow up in, and I intend to keep going until I
achieve that.
